Install CommaView

CommaView has two pieces: the Android app and the matching commaviewd runtime on your comma device. Most people should use guided setup in the app.

Install the Android app

  1. Use the signed release APK from the approved distribution channel.
  2. Check the published SHA256 before installing.
  3. Allow installs from the trusted source only for this install.
  4. Turn unknown-source installs back off when you are done.

Choose runtime setup

For app app-v0.0.131-alpha, the compatible runtime is v0.0.48-alpha.

The app offers guided setup first, with manual setup available for people who already know their SSH path.

Recommended

Guided setup in the Android app

Use this for first-time setup. The app walks you through SSH, installs commaviewd, verifies it, and saves the device.

  1. Open CommaView and choose Guided setup.
  2. The app creates an SSH key, copies the public key, and opens GitHub’s SSH key page.
  3. On your comma, enter your GitHub username under Settings → Device → SSH, wait for keys to sync, then enable SSH.
  4. Select the discovered comma or enter its IP address.
  5. CommaView tests SSH, runs the hosted installer, verifies the runtime API, and saves the device for live view.

This path is safer because the app owns the install, verification, discovery, and saved-device flow.

Advanced

Manual terminal setup

Use this only if SSH already works from your computer to the comma as user comma.

  1. Run the command from a computer on the same Wi‑Fi network as your comma.
  2. Replace COMMA_IP with the comma’s IP address.
  3. When the installer finishes, the runtime shows a one-time pair code.
  4. Back in CommaView, choose Manual setup, enter the IP and pair code, then let the app verify and save the device.

The short URL redirects to the GitHub-hosted installer, so keep -L in the curl flags.

Before driving

Sanity check the setup.

  • App launches without crash loops.
  • Device connection is explicit and expected.
  • Runtime version matches v0.0.48-alpha.
  • Road video is live.
  • Telemetry overlays update without freezing.
  • No warning/issue state is ignored just because the UI looks cool.
